The Clare Tough label embodies a strong feminine sensibility; substantial hand-knits juxtaposed with delicate lingerie and leatherwork have become a signature look. Central Saint Martins graduate, Clare Tough, founded the designer brand in 2001 and was given an on-schedule place at London Fashion Week shortly after. The collections quickly gained critical acclaim for exploring the boundaries of knitwear, often discovering new techniques in the process.
All garments are produced exclusively in Italy, in collaboration with artisan suppliers who are not only able to translate the vision of the brand but also produce pieces with meticulous attention to detail, style and quality. The label is synonymous with high quality knitwear, often hand-knitted and now extending to leather garments, woven shirting, tailoring and lingerie. In July 2008 a joint venture was formed with CT AG bringing together a team of experts in design, production, sales and marketing. Dedicated showrooms were established in New York, Milan and Paris for wholesale purposes. The label experienced phenomenal growth achieving considerable expansion in countries such as the United States, Germany, Italy and the UK. Currently the label sells to over 80 boutiques worldwide.
At the beginning of 2010 Clare Tough stood down from the company in order to explore other pursuits. Having built a strong business with a loyal following, it was a natural decision for the team to continue the label. After an interim period it was decided that Claire Millar, who had worked for the label since 2006, would take on more design responsibilities as part of a larger team. Millar possesses a deep understanding of the labels vision, having worked closely with the factories in Italy and the sales and marketing team. By promoting from within, the directors of the brand make a positive statement about the existing team and the future of the business and demonstrate their absolute commitment to the brand.
