The collection celebrates the individual style and work of legendary avant-garde musicians Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart and draws inspiration from the innovative energy which immortalized their personas in rock and roll history. Their artistic freedom is channeled into details evocative of early space adventure; ruched and pleated panels, orange linings and cosmic prints are seen throughout.

‘The collection is inspired by the recently departed artist and musician Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet) and his friend/enemy Frank Zappa. Their music, their clothes and their album covers. Not paying particular attention to specific things but more their randomness.’ Paul Smith, 2011 The silhouette contrasts oversize volume with skinny pieces, designed to be worn in a soft, relaxed draping style. Modern nipped in shoulders on jackets combine with a voluminous body, accentuated with an extreme leg; notably seen with an expedition goose down parka in luxurious silk teamed with drainpipe trousers.

The palette combines dark tones of grey marl, blue slate greys and navy. Highlights of camel, teal, bottle green and reflective aluminum make a statement, inspired by the classic themes of the early space adventure.

Tailoring remains a focus of the collection. Ultrafine wool is laser cut for a modern, clean finish. Grey salt and pepper checks, wide chalk stripes and Prince of Wales check are punctuated with solid block jewel colours of teal and bottle green, on both single and double breasted styles. High peak lapels, inspired by Zappa’s 1970’s style, grace jackets teamed with a slim leg.

Shirting and knitwear follows the theme of extremes; relaxed washed down denim, stripe, check and classic crisp white shirts to strong prints which include space inspired designs of the moon and patchwork leopard. Luxurious cashmere and fine gauge merino knits are juxtaposed with bold angora sweaters, oversized shawl collar cable knits and unconstructed cardigan jackets.
